Tau Alpha Pi Update Volume 4 Number 3

March 2008

Tau Alpha Pi currently has 102 chapters. We are working with other institutions at the present time in getting their paperwork ready for Board approval. Additionally, there are a number of chapters who have been in an “inactive status” and are currently working to attract new members.

The Tau Alpha Pi Board of Directors has approved a Student Paper Competition. Details have been sent to all chapter advisors and rules and deadlines have been posted on the Tau Alpha Pi web site (www.taualphapi.org). There are not only cash prizes for winners but also the opportunity to attend the ASEE Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, PA in June of this year.

We are hopeful everyone will take this opportunity and submit a paper. Our intent is to have an annual competition for members and chapters so it is important the first one gets off to a good start.

The Tau Alpha Board of Directors met on February 11, 2008. A number of items were discussed but I want to bring two of these to your attention.

1. Part Time Student-Full Time Employment – I have received telephone calls asking if part-time students who are employed full time can become members of Tau Alpha Pi. The answer is yes. As long as they meet the academic requirements set forth in the chapter bylaws, they are eligible.

2. Inactive Chapters – The Board of Directors adopted the following policy regarding inactive chapters. If a chapter has not had any activity (inductees) for five consecutive years, they will be considered inactive. In order for a chapter to become active, the following will be required:

* A chapter advisor
* New chapter bylaws
* A list of new members (minimum of 5)
* A $100.00 initiation fee

Packages must be submitted to ASEE and approved by the Tau Alpha Pi Board of Directors. Current inactive chapters will be receiving a letter in the next week regarding this change.
